The Oath - Frank Peretti

May's 2013 book.

An ancient sin. A long forgotten oath. A town with a deadly secret.

Something evil is at work in Hyde River, an isolated mining town in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest.

Under the cover of darkness, a predator strikes without warning—taking life in the most chilling and savage fashion.

The community of Hyde River watches in terror as residents suddenly vanish. Yet, the more locals are pressed for information, the more they close ranks, sworn to secrecy by their forefathers’ hidden sins.

Only when Hyde River’s secrets are exposed is the true extent of the danger fully revealed. What the town discovers is something far more deadly than anything they’d imagined. Something that doesn’t just stalk its victims, but has the power to turn hearts black with decay as it slowly fills their souls with darkness.

The God Cookie - Geoffrey Wood

April's book 2013

Would you know if he did, if God really spoke to you– would it be booming from the heavens or just in your head?

If it was in your head, how would you know if it was God or wasn’t?

Is God speaking right now but we’re just not listening?

And if God does tell you something…what would you do about it?

Meet Parrish. He’s a regular guy, owns a coffee shop. He happens to be shooting the breeze with his buddies at the neighborhood Chinese buffet, talking about the dents in golf balls and such, when the discussion develops into a debate on whether or not God still speaks to people.

When his friends skip out and he is left alone, Parrish tells God he's “all in.” Ready to listen, do what he’s told, and see what happens. Only moments later, back at his table, he opens his fortune cookie to find a surprise -- instead of a proverbial statement, he reads a directive from God.

“Take the corner.”

God, via cookie, sends him on this first step of a seemingly absurd adventure. His quest sends him to the corner bus stop, where he finds a dropped and forgotten letter, written in a desperate tone, to help those God brings across his path. There, Parrish befriends Audra, a nursing student who rides the bus home. And together they begin to follow the god cookie message, pursuing the random threads of the experiment, tying them together and discovering more about themselves than either ever imagined possible.

The Tutor's Daughter - Julie Klassen

March's book 2013

Emma Smallwood, determined to help her widowed father regain his spirits when his academy fails, agrees to travel with him to the distant Cornwall coast, to the cliff-top manor of a baronet and his four sons. But after they arrive and begin teaching the younger boys, mysterious things begin to happen and danger mounts. Who does Emma hear playing the pianoforte, only to find the music room empty? Who sneaks into her room at night? Who rips a page from her journal, only to return it with a chilling illustration?

The baronet's older sons, Phillip and Henry, wrestle with problems--and secrets--of their own. They both remember Emma Smallwood from their days at her father's academy. She had been an awkward, studious girl. But now one of them finds himself unexpectedly drawn to her.

When the suspicious acts escalate, can the clever tutor's daughter figure out which brother to blame...and which brother to trust with her heart?

The Breath of Dawn - Kristen Heitzmann

February's book - 2013

Morgan Spencer has had just about all he can take of life. Following the tragic death of his wife, Jill, he retreats to his brother's Rocky Mountain ranch to heal and focus on the care of his infant daughter, Olivia. Two years later, Morgan begins to make plans to return to his home in Santa Barbara to pick up the pieces of his life and career.

Quinn Riley has been avoiding her past for four years. Standing up for the truth has forced her into a life of fear and isolation. After a "chance" first meeting and a Thanksgiving snowstorm, Quinn is drawn into the Spencer family's warm and loving world, and she begins to believe she might find freedom in their friendship.

The man Quinn helped put behind bars has recently been released, however, and she fears her past will endanger the entire Spencer family. As the danger heightens, she determines to leave town for the sake of the people who have come to mean so much to her.

Fixing problems is what Morgan Spencer does best, and he is not willing to let Quinn run away, possibly into the clutches of a man bent on revenge. But Morgan's solution sends him and Quinn on an unexpected path, with repercussions neither could have anticipated.

Once in a Blue Moon - Leanne Ellis

September 2012 book

Bryn Seymour was nine years old when her mother died under mysterious circumstances on the same day Apollo 11 made its historic lunar landing. Forty years later—divorced, working as an obituary writer, and duly cynical—she meets Howard, a conspiracy theorist who knew her mom and believes a small Texas town may hold clues to what really fueled her demise. Seeking closure, Bryn goes along for this men-in-black ride. But upon meeting Howard’s son Sam, an outspoken Christian, she can’t decide whose beliefs are more pie-in-the-sky.

The gravity of life has pulled Bryn down for decades. But a perfect love could be her first step to soaring. It only happens once in a blue moon.

Fabulous Fiction Takes a Break

Hello all to our fellow readers. I wanted to say that we were sorry that we missed some of you but hope that you will resume with us in September. We had a fun discussion on "Need You Now" by Beth Wiseman and hope that if you haven't read it, you will keep it on your reading list for later. There were mixed reviews on the book but for the most part everyone loved the family-love-unity ending. If you want to share your thoughts...we would love to hear them through an email or through the blog!

Now, we will be breaking for the summer since many of you have kids or summer plans that we do not want to interfere with. As some of you know, I'm expecting my third daughter in the beginning of Oct. but I plan on being at the meetings September and October without fail just like I did while I was pregnant with my second daughter. The show must go on! But if not, someone will be there to meet and greet you, or I'll send an email out moving the meeting to the next month. We'll have to play it by ear! I hope everyone understands.

During tonight's meeting a few of us went through different books that were suggested and we came up with two that we thought would be good starters. We also discussed dates so the breakdown is below! I hope that everyone will have a wonderful summer and feel free to email me with any questions, comments, concern, or book requests. We only read fiction but there are so many sub-genres within fiction that I'm sure we can find something you would love to read or re-read! Enjoy your summer and God Bless!

Its on a heavy heart I send out this email. Im sad that Kelly will not be facilitating our book club any longer. As for Fabulous Fiction, I have volunteered to take over this next meeting so that we wont be wandering...

Intro:
I've been with FF since 2009. I started up the blog: http://www.westgate-fabulousfiction.blogspot.com/ as a way for other women to join in on the fun if they havent been receiving the emails or have lost them. I dont think I've missed a one...even when I didnt read it I went because I felt it necessary to still show up and fellowship.

We will discuss our book:
Far From Here by Nicole Baart
"Danica Greene has always hated flying, so it was almost laughable that the boy of her dreams was a pilot. She married him anyway and together, she and Etsell settled into a life where love really did seem to conquer all. Danica is firmly rooted on the ground in Blackhawk, the small town in northern Iowa where they grew up, and the wide slashes of sky that stretch endlessly across the prairie seem more than enough for Etsell. But when the opportunity to spend three weeks in Alaska helping a pilot friend presents itself, Etsell accepts and their idyllic world is turned upside down. It’s his dream, he reveals, and Danica knows that she can’t stand in the way. Ell is on his last flight before heading home when his plane mysteriously vanishes shortly after takeoff, leaving Danica in a free fall.

Etsell is gone, but what exactly does gone mean? Is she a widow? An abandoned wife? Or will Etsell find his way home to her? Danica is forced to search for the truth in her marriage and treks to Alaska to grapple with the unanswerable questions about her husband’s mysterious disappearance. But when she learns that Ell wasn’t flying alone and that a woman is missing, too, the bits and pieces of the careful life that she had constructed for them in Iowa take to the wind. A story of love and loss, and ultimately starting over, Far From Here explores the dynamics of intimacy and the potentially devastating consequences of the little white lies we tell the ones we love."

The last 10 minutes or so we will talk about how everyone feels about the continuation of our bookclub, who will facilitate it, and the overall future of our group. We hope that you will come and join in on the discussion. If for some reason you cant come but have an opinion, please email me and I will bring it along so everyone has a say!

Thank you and see you March 20th at Orchard Valley Coffee in Campbell at 7pm.
